Lee Vinsel of The Maintainers | The Maintainers
Lee Vinsel will serve as one of the keynote speakers at the VIZIYA Summit. Vinsel is likely best known as a critic of our culture’s worship of innovation for its own sake. He brings a philosophy of science perspective to the world of maintenance.
A notable article written by Vinsel and Andrew Russel, titled Hail the Maintainers, states that “What happens after innovation, is more important. Maintenance and repair, the building of infrastructures, the mundane labour that goes into sustaining functioning and efficient infrastructures, simply has more impact on people’s daily lives than the vast majority of technological innovations.” This article serves as the basis for Vinsel’s Freakonomics Podcast, In Praise of Maintenance, which speaks to cultures’ focus on innovation, and how it has led us to neglect maintenance and the maintainers.
Co-founder of The Maintainers. Vinsel is an Assistant Professor of Science, Technology, and Society at Virginia Tech, and the author of Moving Violations: Automobiles, Experts, and Regulations in the United States. He is also the author of an upcoming book that looks at our society’s obsession with innovation for its own sake.
